532

PALERMO.
generazioni a venire”.
Stefano Suranati.
L’Ambasciatore d’Israele in Italia, S.E.
futuro.

Yad Vashem Signs First-ever Agreement with Sicily – Buttressing
Holocaust Education in Southern Italy
(9 January 2022 – Jerusalem)
Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, in Jerusalem and the Regional School
Office of Sicily recently signed the first-ever Memorandum of Understanding for the Promotion
of the Study and Dissemination of the Culture of Memory of the Twentieth Century. It was
signed by the Chairman of the Yad Vashem Directorate, Dani Dayan, and the Director General of
the Sicily Regional School Office, Stefano Suraniti.
The Declaration provides the basis for ongoing educational activities between Yad Vashem and
Sicily, including participating in seminars at Yad Vashem for teachers and formal and informal
educators from the Sicilian Region. In addition to the seminars, the agreements also strive to
cultivate mutual exchanges of experience and information related to Holocaust commemoration.
Since 2005, the International School’s European Department has developed partnerships with
close to 40 European countries and over 300 institutional partners worldwide – and this number
continues to grow.
This agreement provides a framework to offer professional training and workshops to educators
and community leaders on best practices for teaching the history and messages of the Holocaust
to the next generation.
The Director General, dr. Suraniti, declared: “With great pleasure we have accepted the invitation
to sign a protocol with Yad Vashem, a prestigious international institution of reference for the
research and teaching of the Holocaust. Signing this agreement, the Regional School Office of
Sicily intends to carry out, in line with the numerous activities already dedicated to the topic by
the Italian Ministry of Education, projects aimed at preserving the memory of the Shoah and the
historical truth about the Holocaust, as well as researching and documenting the history and
presence of the Jewish people in Sicily . We therefore look forward to a fruitful collaboration so
that the agreement can achieve its proposed objectives, so that our young people, aware of the
past, will look at the future with true awareness and true responsibility.
“Yad Vashem shares its expertise and unique pedagogical approach with governments and
educational institutions around the world. Agreements such as this one with Sicily raise
awareness of the history of the Holocaust and ensure that this dark chapter in human history will
continue to be relevant to our society and will help keep the memory of the Holocaust alive for
generations to come,” remarked Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan.
The Protocol will be presented during an event to be held online on January 17 at 3 pm. The event
will see the participation of representatives of Yad Vashem and, for the Regional Office, of the
Director General, dr. Stefano Surinati.
The Ambassador of Israel to Italy, H.E. Dror Eydar will give a speech. After the presentation of
the agreement, a group of Sicilian teachers will participate in a meeting organized by the Italian
Desk of Yad Vashem’s School and by the Regional Office, to illustrate in detail the possibilities
offered by the agreement and to kick start projects for the upcoming months.
